The second month in the Iranian calendar (April/May) opens a new chapter in the lives of the residents of Kurdistan Province. The air is filled with Kurdish music; and the dancers hold hands to make circles around the main city squares and raise their colorful handkerchiefs. Colors are intermingled to create a memorable scene. The beautiful and intact Plains of Uramanat and Kurdistan are filled with thousands of colors: the greenery of the grass, the red color of the corn-poppies together with the pink, orange, violet and blue sky of the “Land of the Sun” (name given to Uramanat) have made this part of the country “a virtual heaven on earth”! This ancient land, located in the mountain-skirts of Zagross with a hundred years of history and nice Kurdish people, makes itself entirely ready to welcome the rebirth of nature by holding festivals, dances, and wedding ceremonies on every corner of the city.Qareh Kelisa (Black Church) , known as the holy Tadi among the Armenians, was built between 4 & 6 century AD over Saint Tatavoos’s mausoleum, an apostle who achieved martyrdom in 48 AD for advocating Christianity.
In 43 AD, Tatavoos and Bartholomeus, 2 Christ apostles, came to settle in the city of Ardaz to advocate Christianity regardless of Senadook’s orders, the Zarathustrian king of Armenia. The Armenian king ordered the massacre of all the people who converted to Christianity along with the apostles who were later buried in Qareh Kelisa. The Armenian people believe that Tatavoos is the 1st church built by the order of Christ apostles. As martyrdom is considered as the highest achievement for humanity, each year, in the last week of July coinciding with Saint Tadi and his followers’ death, a special ceremony is held in Qareh Kelisa.
